Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is by far one of my favourite offerings to you, not only do you feel deeply relaxed, the results are often felt from the first treatment! Deeply comforting, this specific technique is fully directed on your healing. Focusing on reducing swelling to arms, legs, ankles, feet and face. MLD has many benefits to the specific condition you may be presenting with.
I offer three different types of MLD for you here at HVR:
Reflexology Lymphatic Drainage (RLD)
Reflexology Lymphatic Drainage (RLD) is a specialised reflexology technique that focuses on stimulating the lymphatic system through specific points on the feet. Using gentle, rhythmic movements, the therapist works on reflex points believed to correspond with lymphatic pathways in the body. The aim is to encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid, which can help reduce swelling, support the immune system, and assist the body in removing toxins and waste.
RLD is commonly used to support conditions involving fluid retention and lymphatic congestion, such as mild swelling or lymphoedema, and is known for its deeply relaxing effect. By encouraging better lymph flow and promoting relaxation, the treatment helps support the body’s natural healing and detoxification processes.
For Fluid Retention or Swelling – If RLD is being used to support swelling or lymphatic congestion, sessions are often recommended once a week for 4-6 weeks initially. This allows the lymphatic system to be stimulated regularly and can help gradually reduce fluid build-up.
General Maintenance – For general wellbeing and lymphatic support, many people benefit from having one session every 3–4 weeks. This helps maintain healthy lymph flow and supports the body’s natural detoxification processes.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) – Full or part body massage
MLD is a gentle, rhythmic full body massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid throughout the body. By using light intentional strokes, the therapist helps support the body’s detoxification processes and improve fluid circulation.
For Fluid Retention or Puffiness – If you experience fluid retention, puffiness, lymphoedema, or mild swelling, treatments may be recommended once a week for 3–6 weeks, followed by maintenance sessions as needed.
Post-Surgery or Injury – MLD is often used to support healing after surgery or injury. In these cases, sessions may be recommended 1–3 times per week initially for 2 weeks, depending on the advice of your therapist and healthcare provider.
General Wellbeing – For general health, relaxation, and lymphatic support, many people benefit from one session every 3–4 weeks. This can help maintain healthy lymph flow and support the body’s natural detoxification processes.

Key benefits of Lymphatic Drainage treatments:
1. Reduces swelling and fluid retention
MLD helps move excess lymph fluid from tissues into the lymphatic vessels, which can reduce swelling (oedema) in areas such as the legs, arms, and face.
2. Supports the immune system
The lymphatic system plays an important role in immune function. Encouraging lymph flow can help the body remove waste products, bacteria, and toxins more efficiently.
3. Promotes detoxification
By stimulating lymph circulation, MLD helps the body eliminate metabolic waste and excess fluids, supporting the body’s natural cleansing processes.
4. Improves circulation
Although it is a very gentle technique, MLD can enhance overall circulation of lymph and interstitial fluids, helping tissues receive nutrients and oxygen more effectively.
5. Encourages relaxation and stress relief
The slow, rhythmic movements activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting deep relaxation and helping to reduce stress and tension.
6. Supports recovery and healing
MLD is often used to aid recovery after surgery, injury, or illness by helping reduce inflammation and encouraging tissue healing.
7. Improves skin health
By reducing fluid build-up and supporting detoxification, MLD can help improve skin tone, reduce puffiness, and promote a healthier appearance.
Overall, a full body MLD treatment is both therapeutic and deeply relaxing, helping the body maintain balance while supporting natural healing and wellbeing.
8. Enhances skin tone and glow
Improved circulation and lymphatic flow can give the skin a brighter, more refreshed appearance.
9. Relieves facial tension
Facial cupping can help release tension in the facial muscles, especially around the jaw, temples, and forehead.
10. May soften the appearance of fine lines
Increased circulation and muscle relaxation may help improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines over time.
More About Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema can develop after Breast Cancer which is the most common cause of cancer in the UK. Whilst cancer research is improving daily and the majority of women will survive breast cancer, approximately 20% of these patients develop secondary lymphoedema of the arm following their treatments
Lymphoedema means swelling to a part of the body caused by a
Most people have a mix of feelings when they find they have lymphoedema. After treatment, people are often glad that they have got through it. But it can also feel very unfair to have to cope with a treatment side effect. Living with any chronic (long-term) condition isn’t easy. It’s important to give yourself time to come to terms with it.
There is currently no cure for lymphoedema but specialists can help you to control it.
- The aim of the RLD treatment is to:
- Reduce and control swelling when possible
- Prevent problems, such as infection
- Help you to live as normally as possible
